Teleprompter with Auto Scroll: the app

Teleprompter with Auto Scroll is the App Store version of Best Free Teleprompter. Same teleprompter, same voice tracking, same person behind it. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs, and it is free, with no account, no ads and no in-app purchases.

Free on the App Store. Published by Gillian Scharf. Requires iOS 15 or later, iPadOS 15 or later, or macOS 12 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.

Why the app is not called Best Free Teleprompter

Apple's App Store guidelines do not allow the word "free" in an app name, because they treat it as a price reference. The website keeps its name, the app got a name that says what it does: a teleprompter with auto scroll. If you search the App Store for it, that is the name to look for. The developer name is Gillian Scharf and the support website is this one.

What the app does

Voice-controlled auto-scrollThe text scrolls at your speaking pace and waits when you pause. The language is detected from your script when you turn the microphone on: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian.

Unlimited scriptsAdd as many scripts as you like, sort them, drag them into order, and jump between them without leaving the prompter.

Mirror modeFlip the text horizontally or vertically for beam-splitter rigs.

Your layoutText size, column width, line height, scroll speed and the position of the reading line.

Works offlineNo internet needed on set. Scripts are stored on the device.

PrivateNo account, no analytics, no ads. Speech recognition runs through Apple's speech framework, on the device where iOS supports it for your language, otherwise through Apple's speech service. Nothing is sent to us.

App or website?

Both are free and both do the same thing. Take the app if you want an icon on your Home Screen, the screen kept awake automatically, and speech recognition through Apple's own framework. Take the website if you are on Android, Windows, a Chromebook, or you simply do not want to install anything. Scripts are stored separately in each, so export from one and import into the other if you switch. Running it on iPhone, in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as bestfreeteleprompter.com?

Yes. One codebase, one developer. The app is the website packaged for the App Store, with native speech recognition and a few touches that only work in an app.

Does it really cost nothing?

Nothing. No trial that ends, no premium features, no ads. The only mention of another product is a line about cutsmart, the developer's video editing app for Final Cut Pro.

Does it work on Mac?

Yes, on Macs with Apple silicon through the Mac App Store, and on any Mac through the website in a browser.

Where do my scripts live?

On your device. Deleting the app deletes them, so export the scripts you want to keep as text files first.

Install it and read your first script in a minute.
