Privacy Policy

Best Free Teleprompter ("we", "us") is a free online teleprompter provided by Gillian Scharf (Vienna, Austria). This policy explains what data is — and, more importantly, is not — processed when you use bestfreeteleprompter.com. The app is built to be private by design.

The short version

Your scripts never leave your device. They are stored only in your own browser (local storage) and are never uploaded to any server.
No cookies, no ads, no accounts, no personal data. The only third-party service is Plausible, a cookieless, privacy-first visit counter (details below).
Your voice is never recorded or received by us. Voice tracking runs through your browser's built-in speech recognition.

Your scripts and settings (stored only on your device)

Scripts you write or paste, and your display settings, are saved automatically in your browser's local storage, on your own device. This data is never transmitted to us or to anyone else — the server only delivers the app's static files. Your scripts persist across page reloads and restarts with no time limit, until you delete them, clear your browser's site data, or use a private/incognito window (which discards everything when closed).

Local storage here is used solely to provide the function you explicitly request (keeping your scripts and settings). Under § 165 (3) TKG 2021 / the ePrivacy rules this is "strictly necessary" storage, which is why this site needs no cookie banner — there is simply nothing to consent to.

Voice tracking (optional)

The voice-controlled auto-scroll uses the Web Speech API built into your browser. When you switch it on, your browser converts your speech to text and hands the text to the app locally, so it can follow your reading position. This site never records, stores, receives or transmits your audio.

Please note: depending on your browser, the speech-to-text conversion itself may be performed by the browser vendor on their servers — by Google if you use Chrome, or by Apple if you use Safari (Apple frequently processes speech on-device). This processing happens between you and your browser vendor under their privacy terms; we are not involved in it and receive nothing from it. The microphone is active only while voice tracking is switched on (your browser shows an indicator), and the manual scrolling mode never accesses the microphone at all.

Anonymous usage statistics (Plausible)

To know roughly how many people use this teleprompter, the website (not the app) uses Plausible Analytics, an EU-made, EU-hosted analytics service designed for privacy. Plausible sets no cookies and stores no personal data: it counts page views in aggregate (visits, country, browser type, referrer source) without persistent identifiers, cross-site tracking or profiles. Individual visitors cannot be identified or recognized across days. Because no personal data is stored and nothing is placed on your device, no consent banner is required (legal basis: legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR — knowing whether anyone uses the site). The native iPhone/iPad/Mac app contains no analytics at all.

Server logs (hosting)

Like virtually every website, our web server (hosted by Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany/EU) keeps standard technical access logs, which include the requesting IP address, timestamp, requested URL and browser user-agent. We use these logs exclusively for security and error diagnosis (legal basis: legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), and they are automatically deleted after a short rotation period. They are not used to profile or track anyone and are not merged with any other data — there is no other data.

What we never do

No cookies of any kind, no fingerprinting, no tracking pixels, no cross-site tracking.
No ad networks, no social plugins, no external fonts or CDNs.
No accounts, no email collection, no newsletters.
No selling, sharing or monetization of data — there is no personal data to sell.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. Since we hold no personal data about you (your scripts exist only on your device), most of these rights are fulfilled by design; for anything relating to server logs, contact us at the address above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority (dsb.gv.at).

Changes

If the app ever changes in a way that affects privacy (it isn't planned to), this policy will be updated and the date above changed.
