The best free teleprompter with voice-controlled auto-scroll
Best Free Teleprompter is a free online teleprompter that runs right here in your browser — no sign-up, no download, no watermark. Paste your script, press start, and read. Its signature feature is auto-scroll that follows your voice: turn on the microphone and the teleprompter scrolls as you speak, changing pace when you do — never jumping, only gliding smoothly. Pause to think or go off script, and it simply waits for you.
Frequently asked questions
Where are my scripts saved? Do they disappear when I reload?
Your scripts are saved automatically, in your browser, on your own device — never on a server. They survive page reloads, browser restarts and computer restarts, and there is no time limit: they stay until you delete them. Two things to be aware of: clearing your browser's site data (or "clear history/cookies") deletes them, and a private/incognito window forgets everything when you close it. Scripts are also per-browser and per-device — a script saved in Chrome on your laptop won't appear in Safari or on your phone. For anything important, keep your original document, or use the Export button to download a script as a text file.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
This site never records, stores or receives your audio. Voice tracking uses your browser's built-in speech recognition; depending on your browser, speech is converted to text by the browser vendor (Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari — often on-device). The microphone is only active while voice tracking is switched on, and the manual scrolling mode never uses it at all. Details in the privacy policy.
Is it really completely free?
Yes — no subscription, no locked "pro" features, no ads, no account. It's built by a videographer who wanted a teleprompter that just works.
Which browser should I use?
Everything works in every modern browser, on desktop, tablet and phone. For voice-controlled scrolling, Google Chrome is the most reliable; Safari works too.
Does it work with teleprompter hardware, like the Elgato Prompter?
Yes. Any teleprompter that works as an external monitor (for example the Elgato Prompter connected over USB-C) can display this page: drag the browser window onto the prompter's screen, press start, and you're ready to record — with voice-controlled auto-scroll included. For classic beam-splitter rigs that mirror a phone, tablet or monitor, turn on mirror horizontally in the settings panel and the text reads correctly through the glass. The reading-line position is adjustable so you can match it to your camera height.
How many scripts can I save?
As many as you want. There is no limit, and no point at which you're asked to upgrade — there is nothing to upgrade to.
Why doesn't it record video or audio, or edit my footage?
By design. Your camera already records better than a browser ever could, and bolted-on extras just get in the way. A teleprompter should be a teleprompter — this one does that one job properly.
What happens after I record?
That's the other half of the workflow: CutSmart, the AI editing assistant from the same person who built this teleprompter, takes your raw footage and turns it into a finished edit — it finds the best takes, removes silences and retakes, and assembles the story in Final Cut Pro.
